Ouni...The first zero waste store in Luxembourg
Ouni
The Gare seems to be experiencing a cool revival with concept stores popping up left, right and centre. A popular addition is Luxembourg’s first zero waste shop, Ouni.
Ouni, which means ‘without’ in Luxembourgish is the first grocery store in Luxembourg where you have to bring or purchase your own reusable container to shop. With products from organic quinoa to organic wine and soap where you cut as much as you need, this environmentally conscience store was set up by several founding members and is supported by over 600 members who have invested in Ouni.
There’s a long list of products which you can buy here, from dried grains, fresh vegetables, toothpaste to recyclable diapers. In theory, you may never need to step foot in another supermarket again. It’s definitely enticing to know that all the products are locally sourced where possible and are paraben free, but how will the zero-waste aspect hold up?
It could be a struggle at first, to remember your containers, and if like me, you are forgetful, you will find your house filled with hundreds of containers as you buy a new one each time. However, once you get the hang of it, the effects are life-changing, both for your health and for the environment.
The other thing that makes Ouni a hub for forward-thinkers is that they offer workshops, from how to live a zero-waste lifestyle to how to make green smoothies. Find out more about the workshops here: http://ouni.lu/en/workshops/. The only negative feedback is I was hoping for a much cozier coffee shop area but it’s more of a grab and go situation with a couple of chairs and tables. But it’s a great start and I’m sure that when they expand, there’ll be more room for coziness!
Top tip: The founders of Ouni are looking to expand their services to include delivery, by electric bike! Environmentally friendly and speedy!
